"The Rite of Christian Initiation...is designed for Adults who, after hearing the mystery of Christ proclaimed, consciously and freely seek the living God and enter the way of faith and conversion as the Holy Spirit opens their hearts. By God's help they will be strengthened spiritually during their preparation and at the proper time will receive the sacraments fruitfully. " (RCIA #1)

RCIA, or "The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults" is the process through which adults are fully initiated into the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church.

Those who have never been baptized enter what is called the "Catechumenate."  These adults are prepared to receive the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and first Eucharist at the Easter Vigil.

Those who have received valid Christian baptism in a non-Catholic faith community instead become "Candidates," and are prepared only for Confirmation and Eucharist.

The entire process can take up to a year, or far less, depending on the spiritual progress of the individual.
